March 2024 Digest

March typically sees the annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. In 2024, it held its 51st annual meeting in Boston, MA. The Presidential Address was by Steven Fesmire (Chair of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Radford). He presented a compelling overview of his forthcoming book Beyond Moral Fundamentalism: Pragmatic Pluralism in Ethics, Education, and Politics (Oxford University Press, forthcoming), which sounds urgently relevant to many of our classroom and political concerns. It should also provide a topical and accessible introduction to some core ideas from John Dewey's ethics, for those interested in learning more about them.

The forum was represented at the conference by two of its founders, Anna and Andrew. Anna presented a full paper at a session titled Conceptual Analysis and Clarification. Her paper was titled "Portraying Normativity: Wittgenstein Between Pragmatic Naturalism and Conceptual Clarification". Andrew presented an early draft of his forthcoming chapter on "Rorty and Arendt on Pragmatism and (Anti-)Authoritarianism." Each will share more about these works in progress on the virtual forum soon (for members only).

Another exciting development was news of a forthcoming collection from Fordham University Press titled Philosophizing the Americas, coming out April 16th.
